PATRIOTIC FUNDS.
THJOIR A LI.OOATIONL A meeting of the Committee having control of the Patriotic Rumls was held yesterdav, there being present.: Tne 'Mayor (Mr Towniey) and Messrs Macfarlane, Kennedy, A. W. Rees, DeLaufcour, Miller, and Major Winter.
The Mayor said that there was a sum of -fitif) on deposit, with interest amounting to £lO ; of that it had already been decided to allocate .£SO for a brass plate. It might he deemed necessary to call a public meeting, but with such a representative meeting of the Committee he did not suppose that would be necessary. Discussion took place on a list oi preposed grams presented hv Mr Rets. Mr Del.autonr expressed a desire to see the- fund kept intact as a contingent fund, which could he maintained as such for all time. He disapproved of any allocation which might, bo a frittering away of money given lor a specilied purpose, upon objects that would otherwise he met by public subscription. Mr Miller supported Mr DeLautour as far as some of the items went, and said a portion of the fund should he kept- in hand in case a necessitous case arose. He thought they should keep £250 in hand. r i lie list was taken seriatim, and the following amounts passed £SO to the relatives of Trooper Ilurrey, who was killed in action, 1 ; £25 towards expenses incurred by Trooper Parker J illness; £10(1 for a memorial tablet ; and £SO for a town clock.

Rees, seconded by Mr Maefarla'iie, the clock vote was passed. Conk memorial, £s(l. —Mr Kennedy moved that Ihc item be passed. In reply lo Mr DeLautour, the Mayor said the form of Die memorial was not decided. There was about £350 in hand, and the Government had voted £ for £ subsidy. Mr DeLautour : Will that lapse in March ? The Mayor : No. Mr DeLautour : Voles generally do. What was the tablet for, where was it to be placed ? The Mayor said if Ihey gov. a nice obelisk for the Cook memorial, the memorial plate could go with it. Mr DeLautour suggested that they, should add £SO to lhci £IOO for the memorial plate, making £l5O for Cook memorial, which would enable them to draw £l5O subsidy from the Government.;
It was agreed to make the Hem memorial tablet, £l5O, on the understanding that it was to he expended by the Cook Memorial Committee subject to the .wishes of this Committee.

Agreed. flit Miller moved 1o give each ol the local bands £25. The bands throughout, the war turned out voluntarily on every occasion'when needed. Their presence at departures, demonstrations, sports, etc., had the effect, of materially, increasing the funds subscribed. Major Winter seconded the motion. Mr Rees urged that the bands be given £SO each, and moved to that effect, which 1 was seconded Ivy the Mayor, who referred to the readiness of. the hands to assist at all times in the raising of these funds. The grant of £25 each was carried. It was resolved to vote £25 lor the Committee’s general expenses. Mr Kennedy proposed that £25 he voted to the Veterans’ Home fund. Major Winter seconded the motion. —Carried.
It was stated that the amount cyf the fund remaining would lie £260, to ho invested on fixed deposit.
