Tho wicket was sodden. .Trumpor failed to fncrease his overnight score of 132. Duff carried his bat for 132, and Gregory 37, was tho only other one to make a stand. Collins took 5 wickets for 85, Laver 3 for 72, Saunders 2 for 93. Victoria in their second innings lost two wickets for 85 ; Bruce 48, McAlister not out 84. NELSON V. ENGLISHMEN. Tho weather is dull for the Nelson match against Lord Hawke’s team. There is a good attendance of spectators. The local team aro batting with 15 men. Tho rain last wook had a disparaging effect on the wicket, which is in a sodden condition and unfavorable to the batsmen. Nelson won the toss and sent tho Englishmen to the wickets. Keir and Knapp opened the bowling to Leatham and Williams. These batsmen were soon out for 4. Whatman and Taylor, however, made a stand and seyerely punished the bowling, the former eventually being caught and bowled by Kinzett. Stanning oame next, and was caught and bowled in the last ball of the same ovor by Kinzett. Johnston came next, and had a life. Taylor, after splendid play, was beautifully caught in out- I field by Chisholm. The scores are : Williams, b Kerr 1
Leatham, b Kerr Whatman, c and b Kinzett ... 56 Taylor, c Chisholm, b Price ... 51 Stanning, c and b Kinzett ... 0 Johnston, not out 0 Extras 4 Total for five wickets 124 After lunch Thompson and Johnston resumed, and the wickets fell quickly. Up to 3 o’clock the additional scores were : • Thompson, c Owen, b Knapp ... 10 Burnup, b Price 4 Fane, lbw, b Price 0 Warner, not out 5 Hargreaves, not out 2 Total for. nino wickets 179 A DREARY PROCESSION.
Later. —The cricket match commenced at 11 on a heavy wicket after rain. The weather was fine. Nelson sent the Englishmen in first, and the two first wickets fell for 4. Whatman and Taylor made a stand, however, and tho innings closed for 185, Whatman 56, Taylor 50, Johnston 20 Thompson 10, Warnor 22, making double figures, Stanning and Fane failing to score, and extras totalled 10.
The Nelson first innings commenced at 3.80, but tho bowling of Thompson and Hargreaves, the two English professionals, was altogether too good for the local men, who made a procession to and from the wickets, Duncan 8 being ths highest scorer. Broad stumped Taylor, who made 4, Kinzett also making 4, while eight failed to score. Tho total of the first innings was 28. In the second innings, Nelson having to follow on, has lost three wickets for 33, Duncan, not out 12, being highest scorer.
