By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington last night. Colonel Webb succeeds Colonel Newall as officer commanding the Wellington district.
In connection with having the beat advice in regard to utilising the New Zealand rivers for generating electrical energy the Government intends to got a report from an expert who is expected to arrive from Hobart next week. Further reductions are being made in the Defence Department services. A largo number of temporary clerks will be dispensed with at the end of the month. Carpenters in the city feel much aggrieved at the recent award of tbo Arbitration Court affecting their trade, and they held a mass meeting to-night to consider the situation. The opinion was generally expressed that carpenters should not be paid less than Is 6d per hour. A resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the award was contrary to the weight of evidence, and declaring the Arbitration Court unworthy of confidence. A motion in favor of withdrawing from work was not seconded, but it was decided to demand Is 6d per hour from the beginning of February.
