Tho deputation represents tho rifle clubs of the ■district. It was pointed out that the members of tho rifle clubs wero debarred from competing iu many events on tho programme. Out of a prize list of £992, ■tho sum of £779 was resorvod for volunteers. Mr Soddon, in reply, deprecated tho belief that the Defence Department wished to discourage rifle clubs. On tho contrary it desired to givo them every reasonable encouragement. At tho same time tho Government agreed that tho volunteer movoment was of paramount importance. The solo reason for tho Govornmont talcing over the rifle club mootings was to encourage volunteering. He promisod to consider cortain dotails of tho programme for the forthcoming meeting.
