THE NAVY.
By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyr ght Melbourne, Jan. 18.
Mr George Reid, in an interview, said that he did not object to an increase of the naval subsidy, hut considered tho increase of the squadron nothing like the strength suggested by Admiral Beaumont or the proper strength for Australia. This was a vital point in the arrangement. When the first agreement was made it would not have been sanctioned if it had not been stamped as an Australian squadron, as one which was to remain in Australian waters. It would he very much better to have a straight-out coutribution to the Imperial navy, stipulating that the Imperial Government should maintain a certain strength on the Australian station.
