Information- was received this morning that the homestead on the Chatmoss estate.was totally destroyed by fire last evening. The manager, Mr Coward, and family were at church at the time, the only persons- on the premises being two servants, one of whom ran and informed tho manager of the occurrence. The homestead belongs to Rhodes' trustees. Some of the furniture was saved, also a valuable piano. The cause of the fire is unknown.
TIMARU, last night. Whilst at work on Saturday afternoon, a tailoress in the employ of Messrs Ballantyne was struck by a flash of lightning, which paralysed her right arm and smashed the window of the room in which she was working.

Mr Bulleii, of Kaikoura, has donated one hundred guineas to the University debt extinction fund. PALMERSTON N., last night.
At the S.M. Court this morning, B. Smith, S. Doyle, E. Findlay, W. Murdoch and C. Turner were charged with playing “ two-up,:’ and were fined £5 each, in default 14 days. Several informations of a similar nature have vet to be heard.
