POVERTY BAY ROWING CLUB'S DOUBLE SCULLS.

Tho second round of the double scull races hold by tho above club took plage on the Taruheru river last ovening, when two events were decided. ,* The first race was between G. Klee J. Smith I C. Kirk, 3 sec B. Donkins, 3 tec These crews were sent away to an oven [ start, and a good race ensued! The boats kept level for some distance, till Donkins and Smith forged ahead, obtaining a slight lead. Nearing the footbridge the leading boat obtained a further advantage, being about three-quarters of a length in the van. Kirk and Klee spurted vigorously in their efforts to overtake tho leaders, but it was of no avail. Donkins and Smith succeeded in holding their lead to tho post, eventually winning by three parts of a length. The other race was between V. Somervell F. Clark

lA. V. Kirk, 3 sec M. McLeod, 5 sec It was anticipated that this race would be an exciting one, and such would have proved tho ease bad not a mishap occurred to one of the rowers. McLeod and Clark made the most of their handicap, and got a length at the start, Both erev.-s soon picked up their time, and a stiff race commenced. The boats remained in the same position till opposite Warren’s, both I crews appearing to be very evenly matched. The pace so far had been very warm, when McLeod’s knee suddenly gave way, leaving Kirk and Somervell to win as they liked. This evening the semi-final will tik'i place between J. Roderick V. Somervell
