The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING GISBORNE, JANUARY 2, 1903.

ERICK. OF FLOUR. The Napier Telegraph has a word to say as to whether the Milling Combine is answerable for the last rise in the price of bread. “It is open to question,” writes the Napier .journal, “ whether the Milling Combine is not answerable for the last: addition to the price of the household loaf. , There may be in some quarters a tendency to blame tbe bakers, but this is not warranted. .With them, unless they are to become) bankrupt, the price of flour must regulate the price of the loaf. Hence, if flour rises, bread must rise. It seems to us, having devoted a little thought to some aspects of the market, that if it had not been for the Northern Roller Mills and two or three others which have refused to join the syndicate, housewives would have to pay more even than is the case at present. Whether that be a justifiable deduction or not, it is quite plain that some striking anomalies have to he explained. For example, in spite of the drought in Australia, flour is from £lO 15s to £ll per ton in Adelaide, and from £ll to £ll 10s in Melbourne, whereas its wholesale price in Wellington last week was £11.” All householders will have their own opinion on the subject. The Milling Combine is certainly not losing money nowadays.
