PERSONAL.
Mr Arthur Coleman on Saturday- received notice from the Registrar of the University that ho has passed his final solicitor’s examination. Mr Coleman, whose friends are very pleased to learn of his success, left for Auckland yesterday for a week’s holiday. The clever Dr. Donald McGavin, son of Mr J. McGavin, of Tokomaru Bay, left England on Christmas Day by the P. and 0. steamer India, which is due at Melbourne on February 2nd. Dr. McGavin, who has achieved great distinction in his medical studies at Home, is attached to the Imperial Army, and recently returned to England from service in South Africa.
Major Winter goes to Wairoa to meet Major-General Babington, New Zealand Commandant, who inspects the Huramua Mounted Rifles on Wednesday. The Commandant, who goes on to Waikaremoana and Rotorua, will visit Gisborne later in the year. The Rev. Canon Fox left for Nelson last evening. In the morning he preached at Holy Trinity Church, his theme being “ Faith, Hope and Charity,” from which he gave a sermon that created a deep impression. A large number of friends assembled at the wharf to bid farewell to the Canon and family. Crs Harding and Miller left for Auckland yesterday; CrLysnar returned from Napier in the morning, and Cr Jones from Nuhaka in the evening.
Mr J. T. Evans returned from South yesterday. Mr Espie was a passenger to Gisborne by the Mokoia yesterday. Mr J. Lockie returned to Gisborne by the Mokoia yesterday. Mr T. Adams, jun., who has been spending a short holiday in Gisborne, left in the Mokoia yesterday for Sydney, where Ml Adams holds a position with the extensive firm of Cowaa and Co., manufacturers {f paper.
