TE KARAKA ATHLETIC SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL MEETING, Glorious weather prevailed for tho Te Karaka sports meeting yesterday, which was held at Mr F. McDonald’s protty grounds. In tho morning a large number of townspeople travolled by train to Kniteratahi aud completed tire journey by coach. There was a largo attendance of both town and country people. Tho enterprising secretary (Mr J. Dovery) did a good deal of hard work, and is worthy of high praise. Tho committee comprised a band of willing workers who carried out the arrangements iu a very creditable and successful manner. Mr W. Seymour was time keeper. The programme resulted as follows :
Maiden Race, 100yds : A good field started, and resulted in an easy win for J. Monk, T. Boult and B. Gardner fought hard for second and third places respectively.
Te Karaka Handicap, Ist heat, 100yds : Eight competitors started, and a dingdong contest resulted in T. Doherty (10 yds) 1, T. Boult (syds) 2, B. Brown (2 yds) 8. Handicap Hurdle Race, 440yds ; over eight flights of hurdles : Only four started, and tho race was won easily by J. Monk, with A. Curtis second.
Handicap Hop. Step, and Jump : T. Boult (40yds) 1, J. Monk (89yds Bin) 2. Second heat of tho Te Karaka Handicap, 220yds : Tho race was well run, the performers showing good stylo, all keeping well in a hunch from start to finish ; R. Brown (scr) 1, T. Doherty (14yds) 2, B. C. Gardiner (10yds) 8. Handicap Boys’ Race, under 15 years, 50yds : Patterson 1, Dovery 2. Handicap Girls’ Race, under 15 years, 42yds : B, Devery 1, I. Devery 2. Men’s high jump (handicap): Fisher, sft 2in, 1; Law, sft lin, 2, Final heat Te Karaka Handicap, 440 yards : There were only two starters, R. Brown (scr) and R. O. Gardner (20yds). Both got well away, and made a good race for about half way, when Gardner pulled up and gave an easy win to Brown, who showed good form. Handicap chopping competition, 18in log, wbito pine, competitors to decide whether log to ho lying down or upright— Tho following competed : P. Ford (lying), scr; C. Smith (lying), lOscc ; M. Spoiler (lying), lOsec; A. Ericksen (upright), 20sec; W. Davios (upright), SOsce; A. Totorson (lying), 80sec; H. Hammond (lying), 80sec. The ovont hoing one of tho chiof features of tho day, aroused a considerable amount of excitement. Tho axemen all displayed excellent form, getting to their work in good stylo, for which they received rounds of applause from tho spectators. P. Ford won easily in tho splendid tirno of 2min 37 3-5 soo. Smith was second, and Ericksen third. Wrestling Match, Cumberland stylo.— There wero threo competitors. Ford, Hall, and Tuitaro. Ford and Tuitaro wero tho first to compete, and resulted in a win for Tuitare. Tuitaro and Hall wore next to competo, Hall, who was in excellent nick, worked very cunning, and proved too many for tho native, who, although a sturdy sort of fellow, was wanting in style and tricks. Hall received rounds of applause for tho oasy way iu which ho proved victorious.
A most successful concert was held in the evening in the schoolroom, each item being well received. After the concert the room was cleared, and preparations were made for a dance, which was kept up till an early hour this morning.
