The break-up of the drought over a large part of the State came opportunely to lend additional zest to Ckristmastide rejoicings. The thermometer has risen to the occasion and touched 100 in the shade to-day. Melbourne, Dec. 24. The Council, before adjourning to January 20th, hung up the Probate Duties Bill, which the Government desired urgently passed as one of the sources of new revenue. There is a large influx of visitors for the holidays. The general feeling of hopefulness is a feature of the festivities. Sydney, Dec. 26. Obituary : Mrs Pierv, at one time a popular Shakespearian actress, and professionally known as Augustus L’Dargon. The weather was fine in all the States yesterday. Perth, Dec. 26. Mr Burnside, Crown solicitor, has been appointed judge in succession to Judge Moorhead. Melbourne, Dec. 20. At the bicycle races at Ballarat five riders were injured. One, Gipps, sustained severe concussion of the brain.
