LOCAL OPTION POLL.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, last night. The enquiry opened into tho petition to upset tho local option poll, by which nolicense was carried. The Magistrate drew attention to the fact that the petition was not signed before a Justice. Mr Stringer, for petitioners, admitted it had not been signed before a Justice. Tho Magistrate was of the opinion that the petition must be signed before a Justice, and that he had no jurisdiction, but would reservo the point, as he did not wish to baulk the enquiry. Mr Stringor askqd the Magistrate whether petitioners could bring evidence to show that a number of persons entitled to have their names on tho rolls had been struck off', and the Magistrate decided he could not go behind tho roll. Formal evidence was then called, and on the application of petitioners the enquiry was adjourned till February sth.
