LADY'S MAID MUBDEIIED BY A
'FOOTMAN
Johu Breen, a native of Dublin, employed as a footman by Major I'orteseue, Stepheustowu House, Dundalk, committed suicide on October 27, in the diningroom after shooting Aiicc- Moore, maid to Mrs Fortescuc.
Bren and Moore had been in the same service a year, and were engaged to be married, but Grcc-n left his situation and went to England. On returning he found the maid had been receiving the attentions of a footmau at Stephenstown House named John dmj'th, and a quarrel ensued. During the afternoon Breen attacked the girl in the butler's pantry, and on Smyth interfering he took up a knife, the men were separated by the butlc-r, and no more was thought of the matter. But later. Breen, having secured Major I'ortescue’s revolver, shot the girl as she was clearing the dining table after dinner and then turned the weapon on himself.
He fell dead, and the maid died in a few minutes. The state of the room bore evidence of a struggle. Brcei .■ about •i-3, and hi? victim was SO.
