Page, Matawhero, CGth, 414; Guy Woodward, Patutahi, 70th, 389; 1 Dorothy Saddler, 70th. 821. The highest - marks were obtained by Stanley Forne, ; Spit, who secured 601. - The following Poverty Bay matters were dealt with : Gisborne School: A mistress and one pupil teacher to be appointed in place of three pupil teachers. Fresh applications to be invited for an assistant master in ■ the High School, the Committee having returned those previously submitted them on the ground that none of the applicants | were suitable. ' The Committee’s recommendation that ‘ the second assistant master be asked to 1 resign was held over for consultation with - the Inspector. Makauri : A tender for F 279 was accepted for additions to the school building. Tolago Bay : The suggested alterations to the teacher's residence were approved. Waerenga-a-hika : The question of removing the teacher was postponed. Wairoa : Half the cost of fencing was granted. Waipiro : It was decided that plans be prepared fur the school and residence, at a cost of ill 10. In connection with the second assistant master of the Gisborne school, it was decided, after consultation with the Inspector, to recommend the Committee to employ him as their assistant till the next inspection was made. It was decided to hold meetings of the Board in future on the first Tuesday in the month, in place of the third Tuesday as hitherto. An offer of £875 for the teacher’s old residence and land at Gisborne was held over pending receipt of authority from the Government to sc-li. In the course of his report on the scholarship examinations Mr Hill stated : —“ As in previous years, arithmetic is still a disturbing factor in the results. The 1 paper given as a test covers work from 1 Standard IV., and it is curious to find I what a stumbling block the easier work < always is to quite a number of candidates. < Twelve of the candidates failed to reach 25 per cent, of the possible marks in this subject, and they are in consequence disqualified under the Board's regulations. In the other subjects the results vary somewhat in quality. Quite a number of papers in science and history are admirable, and show evidence of thorough 0 training and preparation, whilst others 1 show an absence of systematic instruction, 1 and much weakness. Composition is, v herhaps, the weakest subject of the examination, and few pupils are trained to express their own thoughts in this way. As a whole, the average quality of the papers is decidedly good, and most ot the B candidates are well able to proceed to.the higher course of instruction.” The Board adjourned till tho brd of li February. ti
