A MOONORAIL RAILWAY.
GERMAN ENTERPRISE.
At tho present momont there is but one 11 Mono-Rail Suspended Railway ” in tho whole world. This runs between Barrnon, Elberfeld, and Vohwinkel, in Germany. This curious lino was inaugurated in March, 1901, and tho wholo lino (13.3 kilometres) is to bo opened in March next, probably by tho German Emperor, who takes great interest in tho enterprise. Tho municipal authorities both of Berlin and of Hamburg are just now considering schemes for tho construction of suspended, railways similar to tho one just mentioned. It is proposed to build a suspended railway from Berliu to Rixdorf, and tho lino will be so constructed that the cars will run abovo tho overhead network of the electric tramways in tho city. With regard to tho Hamburg scheme, the authorities are debating between a combined highlovel and underground lino or a suspended ono. Tho cars on this latter system (termed tho “ Langon system ”) run underneath a single rail, and it is claimed that vory high speeds aro possible with perfect safety to the passongers. It cannot truthfully bo said that a suspended railway adds to the beauty of town or country.
