p.B. BOWING CLUB’S TRIAL FOURS j Last evening crewß comprising A. W- j Kirk (atr), L. Tate (3), J. Ilay (2), J. j MoKinloy (bow) and J. Smith (str), V. < Somorvell (8), J* Roderick (2), Arch. Pool (bow) met in tho somi-final in tho Poverty , Bay Rowing Club's four-oar competition, j Tho startor, Mr G. Klee, sent tho boats off ( to a good start, but Smith’s crew managed to grip tho water first, and soon gained a j load. This they increased to threo-quar- ( tors of a length at the Rmilo post. lurk’s , crow, who wero pulling well, would not allow their opponents to incroaso their , load, and hung clo3oly to thorn till noaring tho gasworks, whon Kirk drow closer, ■ leaving Smith with a load of about a quarter of a longth. Both strokes now called on their crews, who spurted gamely, and an exciting strugglo to tho post resulted in Smith’s crow proving themselves the viotors by threo-quartors of a length. This evoning tho final will bo rowed, when Smith's and Donkins’s crews meet. A close race is anticipated. GISBORNE ROWING CLUB, A largo crowd of spectators linod tho banks of tho Taruhoru river last evening to witness tho first competition in tho socond round of tho Club’s trial fours, for Mr G. B. Oman’s trophies. Tho competing crews wero: — 0. Hansen (stroke), J. Wauchop (o), M. Craig (2), R. O’Meara (bow), Warren b! DeLautour (stroko), H. Hill (3), J. Adair (2), Bushnoll (bow), S. Coleman (cox). , , . DeLautour got a capital start, and ms crow soon ostablishod .a lead of three lengths. Hansen’s crow woro pulling in fine stylo, though, and soon redueod the gap, getting on levol terms at Barton s From this out, both crews settled down to their work in grim earnest, and a fine contest endod in Hansen securing a win by three-quarters of a length. The next heat was then got off, the following crews opposing each other ' Dr. Fisher (stroko), C. Buscko (3), G. Evans (2), Hay (bow). 3 C. Adair (stroko), E. DeLautour (o), L, • Sherrill’ (2), F. Shaw (bow), . This race resulted in an easy win for tho former, who wero not extended, and won as they liked.
