PETITIONS TO UPSET POLLS.
MEMBERS WANT COUNSEL FOR RETURNING OFFICERS. By Tolegtaph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Tho i’reinior has received tolegrams from Messrs T. E, Taylor, Jas. Allan, H. i). Bedford, and Thos. McKenzie, JM.H.E s., pointing out in connection with petitions being lodged to upset licensing polls that returning otticors have no funds to pay counsol, and it is doubtful if any othor party can opposo a petition. Thoy suggest that tho Erown should instruct counsel to appear for theso officers. The I’remior lias replied that theso representations havo been referred to tho Colonial Secretary for consideration, but tho .Premier's memory is that Legislature provides for all espouses respecting licensing questions being defrayed by local authorities. Returning officers boing statutory officers, interference by Government, unsolicited by them, but askod for by interested parties on oithor side, would form a dangorous precedent.
