THE NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. At the F.lingamite enquiry this morning Artlicr Young, a seaman, under cross-ex-amination, stated that between 1 anti t; a.in. on Sunday, while on tho look-out on the bow, tiie log was so thick that ha could nut see tho ship's length ahead. Tho foghorn was blowing, but ho had received no special instructions, and had no knowledge of the speed at which the steamer was moving. Between 0 and 8, while he was still on the look out, the tog thickened. It would have been impossible to see a rock ahead before tho vessti struck. Frank l’cterson, A. 15., who was on the look-out when tho casualty happened, stated that when he went on watch at 10 a.ui. the otlicer's orders for a sharp look-out were passed on to him. Ho could at the time see about 00 feet round him. lie had no intimation they were nearing land and no knowledge of the position of the vessel. The lirst thing ho saw was land on the port bow. Immediately he sounded a gong, and shouted to the* bridge “ Breakers ahead,” though he saw none. lie could at tho tiuio seo the captain on the bridge, 40 or 50 feet away. When he left the forecastle about I t nun after reporting land ahead, tho Hlingatuite was still going ahead. As ho was going up tho ladder on to the saloondeck, lie felt a gentle gianee at tho bluff on the port how. He did not know exactly when the steamer came to a standstill
