THE MAORI MISSION.

AN APPEAL FOR MONETARY ASSISTANCE. The following circular ietter has been issued by the Rev. W. Welsh, of the Holy | Trinity Church, inviting assistance to the I Maori mission : “An appeal, signed by the late Primate, has been made to the whole Church of New Zealand to demonstrate her Apostolic spirit by raising annually a sum sufficient to maintain the work of the Church among the Maoris, now that the C.M.S. has (in accordance with its arrangement made twenty years ago) ceased to contribute its annual grant. A sum of £2OOO a year at least will be required to even maintain the present work without extension, but this spread over the whole of New Zealand is not a large amount. The other Dioceses are taking up the matter, and we in this Diocese must do I our share. To ensure this in Gisborne, we propose to ask c-acli member of the Church to contribute at least one shilling a quarter. This small sum will interfere with no other legitimate Church work, and should yield substantial help to the mission from a district which is brought very closely in touch with considerable numbers of Maoris. It is hoped every Churchman will do his share to help in this work.” The matter is one that should receive the sympathy and support of the public of Poverty Bay, and we hope to see a liberal response made to the appeal.
