GARDEN FETE.

Glorious weather prevailed for the annual gathering promoted by Mrs C. P. Davies, in aid of the Maori and Melanesian Missions, held on Thursday afternoun last, and the function proved“an unqualified success, the attendance being large, and the proceeds very satisfactory. 0 The pretty and well-kept grounds surrounding Mr C. P. Davies’ residence looked charming with the bright array of flags and bunting, and the gay dresses of the visitors greatly enhanced tho scene. Excellent arrangements had been made for the fete, and everything passed off without the slightest hitch, reflecting great credit on the organiser and the ladies who assisted her. A large marquee had been erected, and the different stalls were shown to great advantage. The ladies in charge of each displayed great artistic abilities in the arrangement of their goods, and the hesitating purchaser was soon tempted to part with his hard-earned gains, unable to resist the fascinating ways of the fair stallkeepers. The following ladies were in charge of the various stalls (—Produce stall, Mrs Mason, Miss Green, and Mrs C. P. Davies ; toy stall, Misses Thompson, W. Reynolds, and W. Davies ; work stall, Mesdames Nolan, Chatterton, and Miss DeLautour ; sweets, Misses Ida DeLautour and E. and F. Davies ; afternoon, tea, Mesdames Mann, Williams, Misses Williamson, Nolan, and Orr. The unsold articles will be on view for sale at Mrs C. P. Davies’ for a week longer. The object towards which the proceeds are to be directed is one that appeals to the sympathy of the general public, and too great praise cannot be given to Mrs C. P. Davies and her friends for the energetic manner in which they have for years worked in the interests of both tho Maori and Melanesian Missions. We sincerely hope that all well-wishers of the Mission who have not yet contributed will take the ‘ opportunity offered to do so. j
