Rise in Bread.
'(To the Editor of the Times)!.-
g lKi —l soo by tho local bakers' advertisement they iutend to raise tho price of tho staff of life another half-penny from Monday. I think it would only bo fair if Mr Baker would explain to tho poor suffering public how ho makes his oxpenses up to get a fair legitimate profit whon, by what appeared in your locals, tho llour landed in Gisboruo costs Mr Bakor £l3 per ton, aud they uiako something over 1600 loaves out of a ton of flour ; which I think tots up at 4d per 21b loaf to £26 13s 4d. Now, does it cost the difference between the two above figures to make and deliver that ton of flour, when some are working up nearly a ton a day. These last two rises in bread during tho past 12 months mean 25 per cent, of a riso for cash, which I am only speaking about, and means to me about 7s 6d per week, or say £lB a year. That would bo a nice little dividend out of a co-operative bakery, and I am with Fair Play, and think it quite time that a co-operative bakery wore started. I hopo that some abler pen than mine will call a meeting of the public to discuss the ways and means to start one, and I would be prepared to take up some shares—l am, etc., Consumer.
