Four craters and currents of lava are plainly visible, but tlio lava lias kept- between tho mountains, and in no cuso has descended to the coust. At Saluilua, tho viliago which tlio natives hud reported to bo destroyed, everything was found in good order, there being only a few ashes of a decidedly volcanic character found on an iron roof. Tho natives had dosert-ed from tho villages, hut on being assured tliero was no danger oi eruption spreading roturned to work on the understanding they woro to removo to tnoro distant quarters to sleep, Nowhere on tho round trip was iminediato danger to life or property found. Dr Toton, tho astronomer, remains in Matautu to try to got- near the outbreak and locate tlio situation and tho magnitude definitely.
