ERUPTIONS
EXAGGE RAT ED RE POl! TS,
By Tolograph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. News from Samoa by tho Sonomu shows that tho reports of tho eruption at Savii have been greatly exaggerated. Tito island is sinking in tho contre. Some ashes havo boon omittod from tho crater, but very littlo importance appears to bo attached to tho occurrence in Samoa. Tlio official report of tho eruption at Savii stales that a schooner with German officials viaitod the natives in tlio coast villages and allayed their fears that tlio eruption would extend. Four craters and currents of lava are plainly visible, but tlio lava lias kept- between tho mountains, and in no cuso has descended to the coust. At Saluilua, tho viliago which tlio natives hud reported to bo destroyed, everything was found in good order, there being only a few ashes of a decidedly volcanic character found on an iron roof. Tho natives had dosert-ed from tho villages, hut on being assured tliero was no danger oi eruption spreading roturned to work on the understanding they woro to removo to tnoro distant quarters to sleep, Nowhere on tho round trip was iminediato danger to life or property found. Dr Toton, tho astronomer, remains in Matautu to try to got- near the outbreak and locate tlio situation and tho magnitude definitely.
