Australians will be interested in tho fact that the Messagcries Maritimcs de France, already a well-established line of steamships, is now negotiating for tho entrance to Ban Francisco, for tiie purpose of obtaining part of tho trade between this port and the Hawaiian Islands, and Australia ior tho East and Europe. New Caledonia and Tahiti also will bo on Ihe proposed route. The service between San Francisco and Sydney will be monthly at tiie start, and more frequent if conditions warrant it. Tho French Company has sixty-two vessels, having a scrvico on tho west coast of Africa, as well as oil tho Mediterranean and Black Sea.
It is expected tho rates will be broken by the now competitor for the trade The llawuiiaus are said to bo much elated over tiie coming oi the now line, though tho change cannot help their connection with tho Pacilic Coast because ol tho laws which forbid tho trading ol foreign vessels between domestic ports ol tho United States.
