WELLINGTON, fast night. The question whether a packet license to supply liquor to a passenger while on the passage, he granted to a steamer, to have force on the Wanganui River running through a block of native land above Barykin:; that has been proclaimed as prohibited under j section 25 of the Licensing Act, ISSI. came before the Chief Justice this morning, in the form of a mandamus | to the Licensing Committee.
Mr Sk.errett, for the applicant (Murdock Stewari contended that in the event of a town springing up on a navigable river within a district- prohibited either by praLiiLtion or local option, this could not be presumed to prevent the issue of packer licenses t-» have force within prohibited areas, i, was against the policy of the Legislature.
