Sir, —In view of tho sad and heartrending accounts to hand of tho wreck of the Elingamite a few comments might not bo out of place. Every boat belonging to a ship should ho supplied with 100 fathoms of rope with an anchor attached, fixed in such a way that in case of tho boat capsizing it would not fall; a locker in each end of the boat should be a fixture containing provisions, to bo replaced from time to time in case of going bud ; small casks of water placed in such a manner that they will remain in the boat; a bucket should always be a part of a boat’s gear, to bo used for bailing or for a drug if going through surf; mast, oars, and sails should bo lashed in place. No man should have charge of a boat without he passed an examination re handling the same before some party outside the ship ho belongs to. All passenger steamers should carry a rocket tube, those belonging to New Zealand ports should he assisted by Government. Rocket brigades should be established along tho coast, maintained by public subscriptions and Government subsidy. Such precautions would considerably minimise the loss of life, and would add to the comfort of survivors.— I am, etc., Nautical,
