To-day is pay-day for members of the Gisborne Building Society. An impounding notice for the Gisborne Pound appears this morning. M. Somervell’s advertisement in this issue. A military parade is to take place this evening to welcome Colonel Porter home. Mr Thomas Holden has an address to the Whataupoko ratepayers in this issue. Messrs Owen Gallagher and John W. Bobbie have been nominated for ’he Patutahi riding for Hie County Council. The election will he held on Friday, the 21st inst. Ilis Worship the Mayor last night received a telegram from Sir Joseph Wald, expressing pleasure at the opening m’ the railway line to Kaiteratahi, and adding : “ 1 feel confident that ilwill .still further increase the usefulness of the railway service to the people of the .district.” The reason the Borough Council f-jn-not obtain money at four per cent., it was stated last night by Cr Lysnar, is the fact that they are seeking to borrow £IOO,OOO on the security of a £30,000 borough. There was also the question, .he weal, on to say, that the works to which it- was proposed 10 devote the money were not of a practical kind. We might point- out to Cr Lysnar that the value of the Borough" is something over £500,000, A very interesting election contest takes place to-day. when three gen;lenten who have taken a leading part hi public affairs and who all hold lug'i positions have a triangular duel tot the representation of Whataupoko liding on the County Council. It is hoped that Hie ratepayers will all cast their votes. This evening the first rowing contests of the season take place between the trial IG'.U' crews of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club. The first race will be between crews stroked by B. >. Pams and All. Pool, and there should be a dose finish. To-morrow evening crews stroked by 11. Taylor and Pott- ! kin will meet, when another good race : should be witnessed. Arch. Kirk drew the bve. The crews leave the shed at - 5,30 each evening.

Next Sunday, November third, anniversary .services will be held at Matawhcro Presbyterian Church at 2 and 7 pan., conducted by the Itc-v. Hugh Kelly, of Knox Church, Auckland. A service will also be held at Patutahi at 11 a.ui., when the Rev, Hugh Kelly will preach. Cr Whinniy cau-cd a laugh at ti e Council meeting last evening. He was advocating the neces-itv oi the borough going in lor a road roller, and the Haver did not agree with till that he said, so Cr YVLiinray concluded by remarking, “ I am afraid I shall have to write a pamphlet tu convert you.” A soiree in connection with the anniversary of the Mata-.vhero Presbyterian Church will be held at Matawhcro on Monday, November tilth. The Rev. Hugh Kelly, of Knox Church, Auckland, will deliver a lecture on “ Scottish Ilutuor and Song.” There will also be solos by favorite singers. The proceeds of the soiree are in aid of manse building fund.
