UNITED V. COUNTY. Tub Saturday competition opened on Saturday at To Hapara, when the above clubs met. County was weakly represented, but proved superior in all departments of the game to the town club, which pave a feeble display, their fielding espe dally being bad. Hood and F. Parker batted well for the County team, who only batted nine men, while Crawford (seven for 7) and Foot (three for 7) bowled well for them, and dismissed tho United eleven for 18 runs. The above match, arranged under the auspices of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, was commenced at To Hapara at 11.80 a.m. on Monday (King’s Birthday), The weather was fine, though a somewhat strong nor’-wester blew throughout the day. W. Gibson and A. Crawford captained tho Married and Single sides respectively. The latter won the toss, and sent liis opponents to the wickets. The Married men totalled 48 in the first innings, Barton bowled well for the Bachelors, and bagged six wickets for 18 runs. Tho Single men replied with 61. In their second innings, tho Benedicts put up 03. With 50 to tie, the Bachelors again went to the crease, and, after Smith and 11. Sharp had been quickly disposed of, R. W. Barton and J. Gibson made a good stand, and knocked oil the runs required to secure a win without further loss. Both batted well, Tho following are the scores:—

In regcrd to the steamer Balmain the Observer states Whilo repairs were in progress it was thought that if the vessel had a spick and span appearance it would do her no harm, and painters were put on to brighten up the hull.
