MR CRAWFORD’S LOGIC.
(To the Editor of the Times). Sir, —Lord Macauly baa written that “ The knowledge of the theory of logic has no tendency whatever to make men good reasoners.” “ Crusader ” is evidently no exception to this rule. He lays down no premises, he brings forward no evidence,' he proves no conclusions. I will answer him nevertheless, Ist: A no-license vote carried in Gisborne would bring down property values. Mr Hill, whom you quote, refers to and agrees with “ li.H.” in a previous letter, where be 6tates, “All changes of drastic kind tend to promote a temporary panic and to affect valuations.” “Crusader” introduces Mr Hill as an authority, and will doubtless accept his statement. 2nd : Hotels were not introduced to create a liquor traffic, but follow a public want. They belong to the economical distribution of services that allots to each individual some task for the public as a whole, —This was my reply to “ H.H.’s ” letter of October 24. If this is not “ toeing the mark ” please say so, and give logical reason. 3rd: What channels would the money now spent at- the bars fall into if hotels are closc-d ? It is asserted by Bishop Neville that worse evils arise. Drink clandestinely procured would cert linly cost as much as it now does. In view of these facts I claim the money would still follow the old channels, or worse. 4th : Banks and local companic-s are run by business then ; it is their duty to look ahead. That they are convinced a “No License ” vote would reduce the value of properties and securities is shewn by their action in this matter. I may tell “Crusader,” that " There is aland of pure delight, where omelettes grow on trees, and roasted pigs come crying out, l Oh 1 eat me if you please ’; ” but he has not succeeded in proving one point that would induce a reasonable person to believe that Gisborne was going to become that land under prohibition. —I am, etc., W, F. Crawford,
