Thornton, of the Ellesmere Guardian paper, laid definitely, decided to contest the Ellesmere seat in the prohibition interest and as a supporter of the Government A deputation waited on Sir -Joseph Ward this morning to urge improvements at Lyttelton, and asked him lo consider tire necessity of erecting new passenger station at Lyttelton, the present one being stated to be inadequate. Sir Joseph Ward, in reply, said that- lie would consider the representations. He stated that the Government were continually pressed to p ovule extended railway facilities, but they could only do urgent work first. It would require sound reasons to justify the construction of a new station. He referred to the impression abroad that the Government were building new stations everywhere, which he said was incorrect. Only six had been built in his time.
