DUNEDIN, last night. Shortly before one o’clock this morning, a lire broke out in a ten-loomed dwelling in High street, occupied by Mrs Pearce, and used as a hoarding establishment. The (lames, which were assisted by a high wind, had a terrific hold, and soon spread to Walmsicy s I i-roomed house above, and Mrs Maxwell’s hoarding-house below, each of them being three-story buildings. The latterjyas gutted, and the other completely destroyed. Walmsicy was insured for £606, and estimates his loss at £ISOO additional. The furniture was uninsured. Pearce’s furniture .vas insured in the London and Lancashire for £360, and site estimates her ios.s at. £SOO above that amount. Mrs Maxwell was uninsured. .She estimates her loss at £250. Taylor, a hoarder, was insured in the Victoria office lor £125. Mrs Maxwell sold out last week, and a new tenant was to have taken possession this morning. INVERCARGILL, last nightIn tile proceedings against the Registrar of Electors at Invercargill, for wilfully neglecting to expunge names from the roll, the Magistrate, Mr McCarthy, inflicted a nominal penalty of one shilling and costs of Court. He said iie was of opinion that defendant had not afforded complainants that assistance and information which they were entitled to expect from a public officer. He accepted the Registrar s explanation that these obstructions were placed in iheir way because lie thought lie was justified by his reading of the law. but now that his duties had been laid down the Registrar would have to understand that obstructions put in tiie way of anyone whatever party lie migut belong to, would render himself liable to severe punishment.
According to Sir William TbiseltonDyer, the director of Kew Gardens, experiments at Chelsea during the recent fcg showed that in a week six tons of solid matter were deposited on a square mile. They included tarry hydro carbons highly injurious to animal and vegetable life.
