WELLINGTON; Saturday. lii order to improve the facilities for tourist traffic to the Southern lakes the Government have purchased the business of tfie Lake Wakatipu Steam Navigation Company, and ate to take possession to-day. This property includes three steamers mid wharves and plant. The steamers are to be improved and the time table arranged so . that the service may he run in conjunction with the railways, 'i he Government will make further efforts to popularise the Southern lakes district as a tourists’ resort, and will endeavour to give increased facilities to persons wishing to visit that veritable wonderland. AUCKLAND, Saturday. Sir George Dibbs was a passenger from Sydney by the Ventura, and is bound to Kotorua. Interviewed he said in reference to federation, that New South Wales had inane a very had bargain. So far Federation had not been a success. The people of New Zealand were to he congratulated in keeping out of it. Federation was, however, an accomplished fact, and as such must be considered and made the best of. NAPIER, Saturday. The hearing of a charge against live members ot the ship Blenheim’s crew of wilful neglect of duty was resumed ■in the Court to-day. Captain Colville denied the men’s statement that although they signed on for the trip Home they would he discharged on arrival at Napier. They were sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment. lIAWERA, Saturday At a meeting of the temperance party replies were received from the Mayor and Mr McGuire, candidate lor Hawera, both of whom subscribe in every particular to the Alliance platform. This leaves the temperance electors a free hand. A public meeting last night decided to take up the matter of a memorial to the South Taranaki Troopers who died in South Africa. OHRISTCHURCI-I, Saturday. George Mangin, a well known farmer residing with his son at Templeton, shot himself this morning. He had been in the district over forty years, was about 70 years of age, and was highly respected. No cause is assigned for the act. HOKITIKA, Saturday. The , steamer Jane Douglas, when leaving for her long trip last night collided with the south protection wall, and went aground. She was refloated this morning, and proceeded on her voyage. Very little damage was done to the vessel. WESTPORT, Saturday.
So far this year twelve cargoes of Westport/, coal have been despatched to the Chinese naval station. The Whitgift sails tliis morning, the Goodwin is due at the end of the month, and the Mercedes ‘in December. DUNEDIN, Saturdayj The dental examination has just concluded in Dunedin.
