The City Council last night considered a petition from 1510 residents—praying for a grant for a post oilice site in tiie centre of Trafalgar street north, and for.a new post oilice. Adjoining land-owners offered land free of cpsfc sufficient, to make a square of streets. A counter-petition from 1100 people, largely representing vested interests in the vicinity or the present post office site, prayed the Council not to give ally street- site, as the present was the most suitable afitl served Die largest proportion ol ratepayers and business houses. After a warm debate before a crowded attendance of the public, the Council refused, by eight to four, to grant any site. The subject has been hotly discussed by means of letters in the local newspapers for a, fortnight. Considerable feeling and friction have been displayed.
