In the course of an article on South African trade prospects, the New Zealand Times states : “ There is nothing like a sufficient quantity of meat in the colony to supply the unprecedented demand that has been made for mutton and beef of late. The meat companies have had contracts to keep up in the regular markpts, and what small surplusage of; fat stock there has been absorbed by our Australian neighbors. Butter is commanding high prices everywhere, and agents are making desperate but unavailing attempts to place orders for immediate fulfilment. Poultry is at a premium, and if we had a few million birds they could be disposed of just now at a sound price. During the past two months certain exporters have been making strenuous efforts to purchase meat, butter, poultry, eggs, hams, hemp, etc., but those engaged in purchasing for South Africa are finding great difficulty in securing theil' requirements at reasonable prices,
