Lord Charles Beresford.
SHIPPING COMBINE AND SUB MARINES.
(Per R.M.S. Ventura at Auckland.) SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 25.
A despatch from New York, dated ►September 10, says Rear-Admiral Lord Charles Ueresford, M.8.C.8., of the British Navy, arrived here to-day on the steamer Kron Prinz Wilhelm, to spend two or three t'uys with his friends. He said in answer to a question, “When you ask mo about, the shipping combine, I must confess we arc a l'ittle frightened at the probabilities of such a combination of interests. It is ridiculous to talk of England forming a rival combination. We can’t compare with your railways, and it is well known it is the through gate that pays. England will not establish a bounty or subsidy on her ships, for if she did you could put up a million pounds for every thousand of ours. Then, .too, you have 80 million people here and unlimited means.’ Continuing, Lord Charles Beresford said : “The latest addition to our navy, submarine boats, are largely an unknown quality. What we have to be careful of is not to underrate them, nor yet to overrate them. W T o have live of these vessels, I think, and are using two types, one of which is the Holland. If the submarine boat turns out to be a success, it means the key to the situation in the channel as far as England is concerned.”
