A CHILD’S DEATH.

PALMERSTON N., last night. The body of a male child was found in the borough rubbish pit this morning. The child was not fully developed, and according to medical report was horn lifeless. Tho police are inquiring into the matter. With reference to the finding of a still-born child this morning, an explanation has been made to the police by a medical practitioner, rendering further proceedings unnecessary. THE GOOD ARMY, Sarah McCausland, on remand, was charged to-day with theft of wearing apparel valued at £2O, and was admitted to probation for 12 months conditionally on her entering the Salvation Army Home. COMPENSATION COURT, STRATFORD, last night. The Compensation Court commenced a sitting this morning to deal with the claims of land owners against the Public Works Department for land taken for the Toko railway. Judge Conolly presided, with Mr Nolan for the land owners, and Mr Leffilton for the Government, and Mr Malone for the land-owners. A MINING- CASE, DUNEDIN, last night. In the case of a mining company v. the Rev, J. R. Ward, judgment was given in favor of the defendant, with witness’s costs, £2 12s Gd, and professional costs. £1 19s 6d. Mr Carew S.M., held that although the matter of the engagement was discussed, defendant’s account was the more consistent of the two, and in the absence of a written agreement, on which Mr Ward had insisted, the probabilities were in favor of the defendant’s version. DAILY STEAM SERVICE. The daily service bv the Rotomahana and Tarawera, between Lyttelton and Wellington, will be begun on Friday next.
