About 70 in all partook of tile Sacrament on last Sabbat!) morning. The balance sheet was a very satisfactory one, and showed that for the year just closed income and expenditure had balanced. Rev. B F. Rothwell was cordially and unanimously invited to remain in the circuit for a third year ; every member of the meeting joining in the expression of the high appreciation of his work. Mr Rothwell gladly accepted the invitation. Thankfulness was ex pressed for the large measure of blessing received through Mr Lyull's mission. The Wairoa Guardian, in an article on tho Gisborne Wairoa road, states : Surely this should not be if tho Roads Depart merit touk a business like look at the question. But we do not think the Department does this. The main idea seems to us to bo the provision of work for the unemployed, and if wo are correct in our
surmise, then of course there is no need to hurry on tho work. But all this time settlement is hindered, and people are getting heart sick through their hopes having been so long deferred. May wo again ask that an attempt to finish this road be made in real earnest. There is, we understand, plenty of metal to ho had along this route, and a substantial vote, if properly expended, would give us in a few years a road that a motor car could bowl along with considerable speed. But judging by tho snail-like progress made during the past, if a vote of TIO,OOO vvero made for metalling, probably the Department would spread it by means of drays or wheelbarrows instead of a motor. The sottlers of this district aro far too easily put off, too thankful for small mercies, too meek and too easily gulled by smooth tongued aspirants to power.
The Wairoa Guardian states :—ln a district like Wairoa, we cannot have the mail services too speedy. As a first instalment of reform, we hope before tho month expires that the mail will arrive here on Wednesday mornings, if not on Tuesday afternoons. It does seem an absurdity that a Wuikaremoana settler can get a reply from Napier or Gisborne in as quick time as lie can from Wairoa. Then why not come to some arrangement with tho mail-carrier, so that when ho makes an extra trip to the Lake ho can tuke up a mail and bring one hack ? Wo understand that a vory trilling sum will secure this boon to the district, and it would be to the best interests of the district if the Postal Department would consider it.
Yesterday's intoxicating sunshine
appears to have had the effect of unduly exhilarating the spirits of the equine race. A couple of runaways oc-
curred in town yesterday. While coining in from Waimii early in thi morning, Charlie Cooper (son of Me W. Cooper, of Waimii) and Master Gumming (son of the Harbormaster > had a lively experience with a mettlesome pony they were driving in a light buggy. Just on thjj other 9idi of the Kaili Bridge, the pony objected to the breeching by kicking in the front part of the buggy, and bolting.
had rather heavy falls, but were not Both occupants were emptied out, and seriously hurt. The pony careered across the bridge, and brought up a short distance away without doing further damage. The second holt occurred about noon, when a spirited horse belonging to Dr Cole, attached to Mr W. Nisbett’s baker’s cart, made off up Clifford street, Whataupoko, just as the driver, Mr C. Louie, had reached the cart, after alighting to serve a customer. A very plucky attempt was made by the driver to regain control of the horse. ITe jumped on to the shaft, grabbed the reins, and in this position tried hard to stop the holt, but- lie was thrown almost into the ditch by the jolting and humping of the cart. An attempt was made to
stop the frightened horse by a couple of carpenters armed with saws, blit the animal charged straight tit them, and they went hack to their work. Some ladies eventually secured the horse, after it had gone about a quarter of. a mile, and the driver resumed his seat and went in quest of his baskets and loaves, which were strewn along Ute road. The pluck shown by Louie is all the more praiseworthy when it is remembered that he is only a few days out of the Hospital, where lie underwent a trying operation.
