FOOTBALL
WILLIAMS AND KETTLE V, COMMON, SHELTON AND CO.
A very interesting football matoh was i played yesterday afternoon between the i representatives of Messrs Williams and Kettle and Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. Notwithstanding tho inclemency of tho weather the tcamß turned up sharp to time. Tho following players took part : Messrs Williams and Kettle (blue and black) : R. Bell, Wallace, Symes, Colebourno, Dobson, L. B. Sherriff (captain), Adair, Hansen, Peach, Cooper, P. Milne, C. A. Sherriff, H. DeCosta, O’Neill. Messrs Common, Sheltou and Co. (white) : Atkins, Barlow, Coleman, De Costa, Enaor, O’Meara, Nisbett, Clarke, N. Hooper (captain), Busoke, Harding, P. Roderick, Thompson, Graham. Hooper won the toss, and decided to kick from the Te Hapara end. During the beginning of the first spell loose play resuited, the game being very dull from the spectators' point of viow, but later things became more lively. Roderick made a good attempt for a try along tho line, but was well stopped by Sherriff. Play bo came very excitinc?, and for some minutes tho Common, Shelton and Co.’s vanguards kopt tho oval in tho blues’ twentyfive, when Colebourno picked the ball up very neatly and made a good tun for about half-way, but Barlow provod too much for him. Tho blue and blacks were granted a free kick, and Symes landed a pretty goal, this being tho only sooro to half-time.
Shortly after the opening of tho second spell, Thompson crossed the line for Common, Shelton, and tho try was converted by Coleman. From this out the gamo became fast and exciting, and some good play was shown by both aides. A second try was obtained by J >obson for Williams and Kettle, and Symes added tho major points, tho game ending 8 points to 3. Mr T. F. Crawford acted as referee.
