Great interest is being taken in the loan proposals of the Borough Council. The poll is to be taken to-morrow. Wellington, last night.
The export of gold from Now Zealand during September amounted to 57,7830 z, valued at £224,446, against 51,0780 z of the value of £195,096 for September in last year. Last month’s return was the largest for several years, and was principally made up as follows: Dunedin 22,442 oz, Auckland 16,7160 z, Greymouth 10,8150 z, Hokitika 24740 z, Wessport 18440 z, Nelson 20040 z, Invercargill 1088uz, Blenheim 400 oz. The silver export amounted to 64,U370z.
The Defence Department roeeived by the Rimutaka to-day a battery of six guns with fittings. The complete battery weighs over 116 tons. Tho Welcome dredge gavo a return of 270 z for 116 hours.
Arrangements are being made to give a civic reception to Mr Seddou on his arrival in Wellington. Tho Mayor being assured that tho demonstration would have no political significance, to-day acceded to the request of a deputation to call a public meeting. No. 4663 D. Smithyman, of the Seventh Contingent, is dangerously ill at Winburg. Ma«terton, last night. The Borough Council’s proposal for a loan of £SOOO for tho reconstruction of gasworks and extension of mains came before the ratepayers to-day, and was rejected by 214 to 217- Only a small proportion of the ratepayers voted. Bchweigersh iuseu, the German cyclist, lectures here to-tuorrow. New Plymouth, last night. In the Supreme Court two young men named Keith and Harvey were charged with robbery with violence from a man named Anthony at Hawera in May last, the case lasting all day. Tho jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and accused woro discharged. Westport, last night. lan Macrae, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was fined £7 and costs for Sunday trading by Mr Hawkins, S.M. Defendant intends to appeal on the ground that the housemaid, who served the drinks, was not authorised to make the sale. Christchurch, last night. A special appeal, on behalf of tho Church Mission Fund, in the city and suburban Anglican Churches, realised £ll7. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, who has been mentioned as a likely candidate for the Avon seat, states that he does not intend to take part in any of tho contests at the coming elections.
Auckland, last night. At the meeting of'the Auckland Racing Club Committee C. O’Connor (Canterbury) was appointed starter. There were 38 applicants.
