VICTORIAN FINANCES.
DEFICIT OF .£700,000. By Telegraph —Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Sept. 27. Tho Premier states that the finances are in a serious condition. Tho deficit for tiie present year is now estimated at £700.000. Ex Premier Peacock has been seized with illness, which is believed to he lung trouble suddenly developed. He is forbidden to leave his room till alter tho elections.
Later.—lt is now stated that Mr Poacock’s condition is not serious, and that ho will participate in tho election campaign.
PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE COMMITS SUICIDE.

Mr Martindale, who came out for tho reform interest ill opposition to Mr Peacock, hut who subsequently retired, committed suicide by partially blowing his head off with a gun. A remark tuado by Mr Peacock that ono reformer went about during the woek telling lies proached from tho pulpit ranklod in his mind, dospite Mr Peacock's assuranco that it did not refer to him.
