FURTHER REDUCTIONS.
By Telegraph—l’ress Association. Wellington, last night. The new scale of fares and charges will come into force on the Government railways on 12th October. At present tho ordinary single litre is at the rato of Id per mile, but on and after the 12t.ii October the amount charged for a distance between 50 and 100 miles will be at the rate of Jd per milo, wliilo for a distance of 100 miles and over, only Ad a mile will be charged. In the ease of return tickets tho amount will be double ordinary fare. The following will show how the now rates will coin pare with those now in force for a journey of 100 miles First-class single fare will be 11s 7il, as against 12s 7d, and second class, singlo fare, 7s 5d as compared with 7s 9d. For 150 miles tho reductions in single fares will be, first-class, from 18-. 10lT to 15s 9d ; second class, from 12s 7d to 9s 6d. If a journey of 200 miles (one way only) is taken, a first-class passenger
will pay 16s 9d, instead of 25s Id as at present, and a second-class passenger lls 7d, instead of 19s lid. There are also to bo reductions in picnic, school, and factory fares, and special concessions wili bo made to peoplo who make out round tickets for the Hot Lakes, Cold Lakes, and Ilntnner Springs during the summer months. The Department has also decided upon reductions for the carriage of dairy produce, artificial manures, and many other lines. Provision will be made for the carriage of motor cars, motor bicycles, and motor tricycles, and also for tho conveyance of horses by all mail and oxpress trains.
The rates for wool have been largely reduced, and reductions have also been made for the carriage of artificial manure, tar required by local bodies, bacon, hams, eggs, honey, cheese, poultry, etc. Tho time for tho return of stud stock to owners has been increased from one month to three months.
