The Supreme Court sessions commenced this morning. .Judge Edwards complimented the Grand Jury on the lightness of the calendar, which only included five charges, and he remarked on the gratifying absence of offences against women and children. A peculiar feature was a case against a man named Weightman, for dTsoheying the order of the Court, for the payment, of one pound a week to his wife. The Judge told the jury that. Wcighlman’s wife’s mind became deranged, and they separated, the former goiug to New South Wales. Two years after that, an order was made directing die one pound payment. His Honor held that accused had committed no crime, seeing that the order for maintenance was made when he was a bona fide resident in another colony, and the Legislature never intended that a man should be made a criminal by something done behind his back after he had left the colony. The jury, however, returned a true bill, which Ilis Honor quashed, and then lie discharged the accused. An old offender, William Watson, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for breaking and entering.
MASTERTON, last night. A man named Peter Quillice,,a platelayer, returning home from work on a trolley, came into collision with a goods train on Saturday night, being thrown clean oil the line.
