Mr Hall-Jones moved tho second reading of the Australasian Naval Defence Bill, which he explained merely provided for extension for two years of the .£20,000 on the existing agreement for tho colony’s contribution annually to support tho Australasian fleet.

Mr Napier regretted that tho contribution had not been doubled. Messrs Ilerries and Massey supported tho measure. Sir W. Russell contended that if the service cost ,£50,000 tho money would be well spent. Mr Buddo, Sir J. G. Ward, G. W. Russell, Monk, Hogg, Laurenson, Atkinson, Collins, and Barclay followed, all speaking m support of tho motion, which was agreed to on the voices.

The Native and Maori Land Laws Amendment Bill, Lands and Deeds Registration Districts Bill, Pacific Cable Extension Bill, and Sand Drift Bill were read a second time. The committal of the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act Amendfiient Bill and Local Bodies Loans Amendment Bill was agreed to.
