AVONDALE RACES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Thero was a strong, cold southerly wind, with passing showers, for the opening of the Avondale spring meeting this afternoon. The attendance was good. The course was heavy. The amount put through the totalisator was £5756. Tho results were : Maiden Plate.—Romeo 1, Strathavon 2, Sly Miss 3. Scratched : Sextonia, Gold Web, Strowan, and La Polish. Won easily by three lengths, a length between second and third. Time 1,23, divs, £2 10s and £5 Is. First Hurdle Handicap.—Mars 1, Tim 2, Cannongate 3. Dingo was scratched. Bellman led for a mile and three furlongs, when be fell. Sirdar also fell, and Commodore and Winsome baulked. Mars won easily by ten lengths, the samo distance between second and third, Time 4.13, divs. £2 9« and £2 10s.

Avondale Stakes.—Cordon Rouge 1,

Kamo 2, Sans Peur 3. Scratched : Soult —Lady Antrim colt, Soult—Mysterious colt, Lord Seaton, Lady Bobs, and Bon Heur. Cordon Rouge aDd Kamo led at the turn from a straggling start, Sans Peur coming through too late. Cordon Rouge won by a length, a neck between second and third, Te Aroha fourth and Matira fifth. A protest was entered for interference, but dismissed. Time, 50eec ; divs., Cordon Rouge £4 6s, Kamo aDd Saus Peur 10s.

Avondale Cup.—The Shannon 1, Treeham 2, Durable 3. All started. Solo led for seven furlongs, then Tresham, St. Olga, arid Durable. Shannon came at the finish and won easily. Time 2.13, divs. £3 5s and £2 9s.

First Hack Handicap.—Strathavon 1, Lavalette 2, Hippowai 3. Scratched: Romeo, Loch Fyne, Lingard. Won by a nose, in a heavy shower. Time 1.24, divs. £6 19s and 11s.

Steeplechase.—Matarawa 1, Stockman 2, Hinemoa 3. Scratched : CanDongate, Gips.v, Sirdar. Won by three lengths, the same distance between second and third. It rainc-d heavily during the progress of the race. Time 6.43, divs. £l3 15s and 17s.

First Pony Handicap.—Girton Girl 1, Avalanche 2, First Whisper 3. All started. Won by three lengths. Bun in a deluge of rain. Time 1.264, dies £> 7s and l(Js.

Fiymg Stakes.— St. Olga 1, Gladisla 2, Orange and Blue 3. Also started : Bluejacket, Landlock, and Spalpeen. Won by a length. Time 1.251, divs, £1 19a and ttt'i
