FIRE AT WHANGAREI.
CEMENT WORKS DESTROYED,
DAMAGE OF £15,000.
By Tolegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. A disastrous fire occurred on Limestone Island, near Whangarei, at 2.30 a.m., on Sunday, when tho wholo of tho cement works wero destroyed by fire. It is bolieved to have originated through tho ground coal igniting. Tho fire was assisted by gas generating rapidly, and it spread throughout the works. The morning shift working had a narrow escape. Tho loss is estimated at about £15,000. Forty men havo been thrown out of work, ‘ and various contracts to supply cement ' arc incomplete. The scow Pukapuka, at the Cement Company’s wharf, narrowly - escaped being burnt, as a strong southwest gale was blowing. Tho works are insured for £7300.
