CHINESE FINED,

Wellington, last night. Some of the first prosecutions in the colony under the Opium Prohibition Act of last year were heard at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Two Chinese were each fined 5s for smoking opium. A charge against Agung Quay for permitting opium to be smoked on his premises was dismissed. The cases were the result of a visit paid to the Chinese quarter a few days ago by the police and Customs officers.
