The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, SEPTEMBER 13, 1902.

Tin-: heavy rains uf the last few days have resulted in considerable damage being done to the roads throughout the district, and it is to be hoped that the County Council will without delay devise ways amt means to effect repairs to the same. From enquiries made last evening, we learn that the damage to Tolago Hill is likely to prove very serious unless immediate steps are taken to repair it. \\ e are aware that financially the Council is in a bad way, but the :: gency of the present case demands that something must be done, and that without delay. No doubt, if members were to meet to-day, and the position were placed before Mr Carroll, he would see that a vote was placed on the Supplementary Estimates, and this would enable the work to at once be pioceedeG with. Failing that the Council must find some other means of undertaking the woik. Even at the best it means some days before the road will be open for wheeled traffic, and we do not desire a repetition of what occurred two or three years ago, when the load was closed to wheeled traffic for several weeks. The Waiapu County Council have recently spent over ten thousand pounds on the road beyond Tolago, and it is therefore imperative on the part of the Cook County Council to see that the road from Gisborne to Tolago Bay is kept open for wheeled traffic.
