AUSTRALIANS v. SOUTH OF ENGLAND.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Sept. 9. There is bright weather for the second day of the match. Slight rain fell in the early morning. England have lost four wickets for 344. Abel and Burnupresumed, facing Saunders and Trumble. A century appeared, both playing sound, free cricket, the best first wicket partnership during their tour. Burnup was grandly caught at mid-off, at a second attempt by Jones, after a chanceless innings. Ho made six fourers. The partnership lasted 130 minutes, and brought the total to 122. Abel remained a few minutes after Hayward came, Armstrong bowling him. His innings was chanceless. Two wickets for 127. Hraund joined Hayward, and another fine partnership was seen. The batting had been rather poor against the bowling of Hopkins and Armstrong, but it became freer just before the luncheon interval. When Braund was 33 there was a chance of stumping, off Saunders. Carter was giving many byes. Braund was caught deep at point by Hill. Batting was brighter. The partnership occupied 70 minutes. Three for 215. Mason followed. The total of the Australian innings was passed in four hours. Hayward scored steadily. At 256 Jones went on to howl for the first time. Mason sent one to Duff at longleg, and retired. Four for 312. Day was next. Hayward obtained a century. The scores are :

Hayward carried his score to 106, when playing forward one from Armstrong he was caught low down by Hill at squarelog. Ho was three hours at the wickets, and did not givo a single chance. Five for 354. Day went at 44, being stumped by Carter. Six for 375. Dillon was bowled by Noblo when he had made 8. Seven for 383. Grace and Vino playod out time. The Englishmen were six hours at the wickets. Dillon replaced Jessop, who is still indisposed. The scores are Hayward, c Hill, b Armstrong ... 106 Day, st Carter, b Noblo ... ... 44 Grace, not out 10 Dillon, b Noblo 8 Vine, not out 3
LORD HAWKE’S TEAM,
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. A meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association last evening decided not to sign the agreement granting Lord Hawke permission to play professionals in his team. They also objected to forward a letter of credit to the New Zealand Association unless the Australian Association contributes a portion of tho not receipts providing Lord Hawke’s toam visits Australia. Nelson, last night. A subscription of £IOO to ensure a match with Lord Hawke’s toam was raised and a draft forwarded to Christchurch this morning.
