AUSTRALIA V. THORNTON’S ELEVEN. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright London, Sept. -1. The Australians commenced a match to-day at Scarborough against C. J. Thornton's eleven, made up of Jackson, (ones, Taylor, K. E. Forster, Tunnicliffe, Hirsh, Haigh, Rhodes, Hunter, Thompson, and Tyldesley. From the visitors wore omitted Jones, Howell, and Carter. The weather at the start was bright, but boisterous. The wicket was good, and the attendance large. The Englishmen won tho toss, and [ones and Tunnicliffe were the first batsmen. Jones did the bulk of the scoring, arid had 31 to his credit when he lost Tunnicliffe, clean bowled by Saunders for nine. One for 45. The next two wickets fell without any alteration to the sene, Saunders bowling Tyldesley, and Darling dismissed Jones with a catch off Trumble. Taylor batted up thiee before be was caught by Noble off Saunders. Four for 56. Forster had little belter luck. He made five and was given out leg before to Tiumble. Five for 63. Hirst bad a similar experience, excepting that lie managed to put together 14. Six for 79. Jackson, v. do went in luurtli man, played ajvvaicliful game, and Thompson kept things moving till luncheon adj .urnment, when the record was six for 108

Jackson was caught by Hill at long-off with a good running catch Eight for IS4. Saunders and Irumble bowled throughout the partnership, which lasted 90 minutes. Rhodes joined Haigh, but failed to score, Duff effecting n well-judged catch at longon. Nino wickets for 147. Haigh, a few minutes later, was bowled by Saunders.
