Mr Seddon made an amusing reference to Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s claim that Canada was the baker of the Empire, and Sir Edmund Barton's that Australia was the butcher. He wondered for the moment where New Zealand was to come in, but in that colony they had not all their eggs n one basket, but could claim a combination of butcher, baker, and dairyman, and might be relied on never to fail the Empire. New Zealand mutton, Mr Seddon told them, was unsurpassed, while her beef was the nearest approach to, if indeed it did not surpass, the juicy roast beef of Old England.
