Tho weather is clearing. Bain has been general over the State, with soaking falls in the northern and central districts, and elsewhere mostly light. Twelve inches fell at Wagga, and considerable damage was done by Hoods. Obituary : Captain Mayne, ex AuditorGeneral and tirst Agent-General for New South Wales, aged 95. Mr Musgrovo states that Madame Melba left Vancouver for Australia a week ago. Melbourne, Sept. 2.
The Board appointed to report on the naval defence of tho Commonwealth recommended that four torpedo boats be sold as obsolete, and another kept as a launch. With the boats aro some £60,000 worth of obsolete stores. Out of £149,000, tendered for the Board of Works £400,000 Si- per cent, loan, tho public offered £249,000, but £IO,OOO of this was under conditions which rendered it unacceptable. The amount accepted averaged £99 10s 3d. Brisbane, Sept. 2. Good rains have fallen in tho southern half of the State. The Government aro investigating a report that a party of police in April last shot in cold blood four aboriginals in tho vicinity of McDonald, who, it is alleged, had stolen a cow.
